Owens & Minor Recognized by CIO Magazine as One of the CIO 100 Award Honorees for 2011

RICHMOND, Va., Jun 01, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- IDG's CIO magazine today announced that Owens & Minor, Inc. (NYSE-OMI) is a recipient of the 2011 CIO 100 award. The 24th annual award program, produced each year by CIO magazine, recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT). The theme of this year's CIO 100 was "innovation for business growth."

"This year's CIO 100 awards draws well-deserved attention to companies that are not only innovating with IT but creating genuine business value as well," said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of CIO magazine & Events. "These winning companies and their IT organizations are an inspiration to businesses everywhere."

The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. First, companies completed an online application detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives. Next, a team of judges reviewed the applications in depth, looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100.

"To be named to the CIO 100 is truly an honor for Owens & Minor, as we have for many years used information technology to improve service to our customers, build our business and bring innovation to the healthcare market," said Craig R. Smith, president & chief executive officer of Owens & Minor. "Innovation for business growth defines what Owens & Minor is all about in the marketplace."

As an early adopter of information technology, Owens & Minor has used information technology as a means to enhance and improve its services to healthcare provider customers and to leverage its distribution capabilities from its 50-plus distribution centers across the nation. In addition, Owens & Minor has a track record of creating or acquiring software tools that provide a more efficient, cost-effective supply chain. Owens & Minor uses technology to enhance a variety of its services, including supply chain management consulting, inventory management, distribution services and third party logistics.

"The CIO 100 award salutes the collective accomplishments of everyone on our team, as well as our success in collaborating with our customers, suppliers and vendors to leverage technology to bring innovation to market. At Owens & Minor, we have a history of deploying information technology to enhance our service to customers and suppliers and to aid in improving the healthcare supply chain," said Rick Mears, senior vice president & chief information officer of Owens & Minor. "This award validates the collaborative efforts of the Owens & Minor teammates who have proven time and again that they can effectively use technology to partner with our healthcare provider customers and our supplier partners."

The 2011 CIO 100 awards will be presented at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 14-16 at the conclusion of the sixteenth annual CIO 100 Symposium(R) and Awards Ceremony. Complete coverage of the 2011 CIO 100 awards will be online at on August 1, 2011 and in the August 1 issue of CIO magazine.
