Sustainability

Our Sustainability Priorities

Since our founding in 1882, Owens & Minor has remained committed to our teammates, customers, and communities where we conduct business. We recognize the need to identify, prioritize, and manage non-financial impacts from our operations.

In 2021, we completed our first sustainability materiality assessment to identify and prioritize topics most relevant to our key stakeholders. Using the results of this assessment, we developed a framework to align ESG risks and opportunities with our overall business strategy. Our Sustainability Framework forms the basis of our program, integrating the priorities identified in our materiality assessment into key aspects of our operations. This framework is grounded in our Mission and emphasizes the importance of incorporating sustainability commitments into our culture and values.

Sustainability Governance

To effectively manage the implementation of our sustainability strategy, Owens & Minor developed a sustainability governance structure designed to define our framework and deliver on our commitments. A Sustainability Governing Board, composed of members of the Executive Leadership Team, oversees the ESG programming. A Sustainability Steering Committee, composed of top-line leadership from business segments across the organization, implements sustainability priorities and recommends policies and practices that conform to our sustainability strategy. There are also several working-level committees that manage ESG activities within the company.

Promoting Environmental Stewardship

We work to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment. To minimize climate risk, we proactively review our facilities and supply chain and monitor climate-related threats and opportunities to ensure continuity of our supply and operations. We manage our carbon footprint through fleet efficiency goals and a dedicated emissions reduction working group. We seek to reduce waste from our operations by improving our packaging and labelling, in-house scrap reuse in manufacturing processes, and by building recycling partnerships with our customers. We strive to responsibly manage water as a shared resource with award-winning wastewater treatment processes and efficiency enhancements in our use of process water.

As part of our commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint, in 2022, Owens & Minor committed to two climate goals:

  1. 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030
  2. Net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050

Climate Resilience Plan

As part of our efforts to buffer against climate risk, we are proud to share a Climate Resilience Plan for Continuous Operations outlining our strategies to manage the climate impacts of our business and to identify and address prospective risks to our business brought on by climate change.

Caring for Our Customers and Communities

We deliver superior service and innovative solutions for our customers and the communities we support. To maintain product quality and meet regulatory requirements, we have a dedicated team of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs professionals to oversee the product lifecycle. We invest in the communities where we operate by encouraging our teammates’ volunteerism. Through our innovative healthcare solutions, we build stronger communities, develop integrated solutions with our partners, collaborate to enable supply chain continuity, and support healthcare to focus on complex patient needs.

Operating Responsibly

We strive to demonstrate sound governance, accountability, and responsible sourcing. Owens & Minor maintains a Code of Honor as part of our comprehensive Compliance and Ethics Program and monitors corruption and bribery risk through our Internal Audit, Procurement, Compliance, and Vendor Relations Teams. To safeguard against cybersecurity risk and ensure data privacy, we model our cybersecurity program to align with practices and standards referenced within the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

Empowering Our Teammates

Owens & Minor fosters an empowering, safe, diverse, and inclusive work environment where all teammates can thrive. We strive to empower our teammates by ensuring there are open channels of communication across all levels of the organization. We provide learning resources and tools designed to support teammates in developing skills for their role and planning their career paths. Through our annual talent review, we offer leadership development opportunities to increase the readiness of top talent leaders to assume greater responsibility at Owens & Minor.
